Construction Begins Oct. 12 on I-66 and Route 17 Interchange Improvements in Fauquier County
CULPEPER — On Monday, Oct. 12, construction will begin on a project to improve the Interstate 66 and Route 17 (Winchester Road) interchange at Exit 28 in Fauquier County. The project is expected to be completed by Oct. 1, 2028.
The project will modify the existing interchange where Route 17 intersects with the eastbound and westbound I-66 ramps just south of Marshall.
The I-66 westbound ramps at Route 17 will be reconstructed as a roundabout. The eastbound ramps will be reconfigured as a restricted crossing U-turn, or RCUT, intersection. The project will also eliminate crossovers at the interstate ramps and lengthen the ramps.
A directional median will be installed at Route 691 (Carters Run Road) to restrict left-turn movements from Carters Run Road onto Route 17. Instead, motorists will use a new U-turn location farther south on Route 17.
During construction, one lane may be closed on northbound and southbound Route 17. Drivers should expect delays, use caution near the work zone, and follow signs and other traffic controls.
The improvements will reduce conflict points along Route 17 corridor and improve traffic flow through the interchange.
The project is funded through Virginia’s SMART SCALE program. All work is weather permitting.
