Governor Joe Lombardo Directs Housing Funds to Assist Washoe County Wildfire Victims
NEVADA, August 28 - CARSON CITY, Nev. – Governor Joe Lombardo today signed an executive order directing the Nevada Housing Division to provide funding through the Nevada Attainable Housing Account to support rental assistance and short-term housing costs for Washoe County residents impacted by wildfires.
The Governor’s executive order follows a series of fires that have affected Washoe County over the last 30 days, including the Bug Fire, Fred Mountain Fire, and Hawk Fire. These wildfires prompted evacuation orders for more than 40,000 Washoe County residents, caused power outages, destroyed approximately 58 homes, and left another 10 homes uninhabitable.
“Over the last month, thousands of Washoe County residents have faced the uncertainty of evacuation, displacement, and, for some, the loss of their homes,” said Governor Lombardo. “This executive order puts existing state resources to work quickly, helping families secure stable housing and recover from these devastating wildfires.”
In 2025, the Nevada Legislature passed Assembly Bill 540, the Nevada Housing Access and Attainability Act, and established the Nevada Attainable Housing Account, which is administered by the Nevada Housing Division. The Legislature appropriated State General Funds to the Account and authorized the Division to distribute funds to eligible entities for attainable housing purposes.
“The recovery process will take time, but the State of Nevada will be there every step of the way,” continued Governor Lombardo. “This short-term relief will help families get through the immediate challenges, but we know some residents will need support for much longer as they work to return to stable housing. I have also directed the Housing Division to develop a long-term disaster recovery housing stability plan that provides additional opportunities for housing assistance.”
Under the executive order, the Nevada Housing Division will provide funding to the City of Reno for Washoe County residents impacted by the 2026 wildfire disasters.
